No matter how hot the outside temperature, it’s important to keep your cool in a dental emergency. Emergencies can happen at any time, and even a the most careful among us can tumble from a bike or bite down at a picnic, to find a tooth has cracked or an old filling has come loose. If you find yourself in an immediately painful or confusing dental situation, remain calm and call your dentist’s office. The dental staff can make sure your questions are answered, and you are seen quickly, when necessary.
Assess the Situation
In any emergency, if there is significant bleeding, or you feel life is in immediate danger, you should call 911 immediately. If you determine the situation involves the teeth or mouth and does not require immediate transport to a hospital, take a deep breath and get out your cell phone (or head to the nearest phone). Take a moment right now, to make sure your dentist office number is programmed into your cell phone, or posted near your phone at home.
Call Your Dentist’s Office
Our staff is trained to help you react in an emergency. We may ask you to come in (or bring your child in) right away. In some cases, we may see you later the same day, or the next day. We may also have some immediate “what to do next” information, such as replacing a partially knocked out tooth into the socket, or other instructions.
Move to a Quiet, Safe Spot
If you are in dental discomfort, you may want to find a quiet space in your office or have your child wait in the nurse’s office at school. Don’t lose your head — keep your mental state cool, calm and balanced to help the situation go as smoothly as possible. If you are heading to your dental office, consider asking a friend, family member or coworker to drive you.
