Test Your Tooth Implant Vocab: P Words

Tooth implants are one of the most successful options to supply a highly stable and long-lasting replacement for a missing tooth. Implants can also support restorative solutions for multiple missing teeth, such as implant supported dentures. Although dental professionals are familiar with the specialized vocabulary of tooth implants, these words may be unfamiliar to patients. We are always glad to answer your tooth implant questions. Here are words you may hear when discussing implants in our office.

Periodontitis

Periodontal disease is disease of the soft tissue structures that support the teeth. When these tissues become infected, this is called periodontal disease, or periodontitis. It is one of the leading causes of tooth loss for adults. Brushing your teeth with excellent daily tooth brushing techniques twice a day, and regularly flossing, are excellent safeguards to protect against periodontitis. You should also see your dentist twice a year to alert you to any early signs of trouble that could develop into periodontitis.

Prosthesis

A dental prosthesis is a finely crafted replacement part for your mouth or jaw. A prosthesis can restore the function and attractiveness of a smile. In many cases, a dental implant is a prosthesis performs both functions. By replacing a missing tooth, or supporting a full or partial denture, it restores the ability to speak, chew and eat in a healthy manner. At the same time, it restores the natural look of the smile.

Pontic

A pontic is a replacement tooth, often part of a denture. It takes the place of a tooth that has been lost. A pontic may sit between two implant-supported teeth on a partial denture, for example.
