Manage Stress To Help Protect Jaw Joints

Your TMJ disorder may be caused in part by stress. Or, while it may have very little to do with tension and anxiety, when you do not manage your stress, it can make matters worse. So, what to do regarding your ability to remain calm and mindfully channel any feelings of stress that crop up? We can help! Remember that by combining an approach to remaining calm and treatment from our practice, you can address TMJ concerns to improve jaw health and comfort.

Exercise!

If you’re someone who tends to stress quite frequently, don’t underestimate the effect this can have on your jaw joints! You may be internalizing that stress and it can play out as muscle tension. When this happens around your jaw joints, it’s not helping your TMJ disorder. Consider adding exercise to your life if you have not already. It’s a natural way to relieve anxiety, which can help with your oral health, too!

Take Time To Listen To Favorite Music

A quick and easy way to give your body the release it needs to relax is listening to music! Of course, we suggest you come up with a playlist of songs that help you drift away (not those that cause your blood pressure to spike!). It can make a difference.

Meditate

This one is wide open. You may take up meditation, so you can learn to center your thoughts and let the anxieties of the day go. You may also seek out meditative arts and other outlets of expression that will help you maintain a restful state. For instance, working on art, learning breathing exercises, and practicing yoga will all guide you toward releasing the tension in your facial and jaw muscles that make matters worse for TMJ disorder.
