Are you wondering about the cause of your sore jaw? Perhaps it’s a momentary result of something you did to irritate your TMJs. Or, perhaps it’s a sign that you need some attention from our practice for a more serious concern like TMJ disorder. As you know very well by now, you can get some good ideas about what might be going on from home. However, for the final say on what’s irritating your jaw, you’ll need a visit!
#1: You Slept Weird
Sometimes, the reason you have a sore jaw is very simple. Think back through your day and when you noticed your jaw began to hurt. Was it hurting in the morning? Sometimes, you take on a very strange pose while you’re asleep, possibly with your jaw in an unusual position. This can lead to some strain and discomfort, which should go away within a day or two. If you find that the discomfort persists, come on in for a visit!
#2: Bruxism Is Irritating Your TMJs
You might discover that your jaw joint discomfort is the result of bruxism. This is a disorder that’s going to get in the way of otherwise completely healthy function. It’s a problem that develops when your muscles move on their own (you’re not doing it voluntarily), causing you to grind your teeth back and forth or to clench them. The pressure and/or movement can result in a sore jaw, amongst other things. Contact us if this sounds familiar.
#3: Your Jaw Joints Are Having Problems
Also called your TMJs, your jaw joints may be under stress due to one or multiple issues. This might include: Damage, inflammation, strain, and more. When you see us about your sore jaw, we can explain the problem and offer care to fix it.
