When to Schedule a Checkup Outside of Schedule

In general, most people should attend a dental checkup and cleaning appointment at least once every six months. Allowing your hygienist to carefully clean your teeth and your dentist to thoroughly check them helps you successfully prevent most dental issues from developing. However, there may be times when a problem becomes apparent well before it’s time for your next visit. For instance, these three instances are a few among many times when scheduling a visit with your dentist as soon as possible is the best option for your smile.

When your tooth hurts

During your routine visits, one of the things your dentist checks thoroughly is the strength and integrity of your teeth and their surrounding enamel. This enamel is meant to protect your tooth structures from things that can irritate them, like food particles and harmful oral bacteria. If one or more teeth start to hurt suddenly, then the tooth structure and/or enamel may be compromised and seeking treatment immediately could be necessary to stem the damage.

When you notice bleeding in your gums

Bleeding gums don’t always hurt, but they always indicate a problem. Either you’re brushing and flossing too harshly or your gums may be in the early stages of disease – a condition known as gingivitis. The longer you wait to seek treatment, the more damage gum disease can do to your gums and the tissues that support your teeth.

When your jaws start popping and clicking

When your jaw opens and closes, it moves along two large joints on either side of your face, known as temporomandibular joints (TMJs). When healthy, this movement is smooth and comfortable. When the joints pop, click, and shift when you move them, then you may have developed a TMJ disorder. This can damage your joints further and lead to a host of dental issues, including bruxism and tooth damage, unless you seek a diagnosis and customized treatment option as soon as possible.
