When you have stained teeth, you may be interested in achieving a brighter smile. With professional teeth whitening, we have two options to help brighten the teeth, often by several shades. In today’s blog, your Katy, TX, dentist talks about how we can use in-office and at-home treatments to brighten your teeth.
Teeth Stains: Causes and Prevention
Why do we develop unsightly brown and yellow stains on our teeth? The causes vary! For example, poor oral hygiene habits could allow plaque buildup to flourish, and make stains more visible in the process. Drinks with dark pigments and stains, such as teas, red wine, soda, and coffee, could also make discoloration more visible too. If you eat foods high in sugar and starch, these can promote plaque. For other tobacco use is a source of their discoloration. Understanding the causes means a chance to make positive changes to your daily life, like eating a healthier diet, drinking more water, brushing and flossing properly, and seeing us for dental cleanings! But to remove the stains currently visible on your teeth, we could offer professional teeth whitening.
In-Office Teeth Whitening
Our in-office teeth whitening procedure can actually provide stunning results in only one visit, usually in under two hours total. To begin, we will sit you down and cover your lips and gums with a protective covering. We then apply the bleaching gel to the teeth. A special light is employed to activate the gel and break up discoloration. This is great if you need results quickly. For example, before a first date or a job interview.
An At-Home Option
We also have at-home teeth whitening, we can handle more severe staining while also limiting tooth sensitivity. The process starts with a quick visit to our office. There, we will take detailed digital images of your teeth from multiple angles. We then use them to create a set of plastic trays, which we send home with you. We also prove plastic syringes filled with a powerful bleaching gel. At home, you will add the gel to the trays and wear them for about an hour a day. The trays ensure even results across the smile, and also prevent the gel from being diluted by saliva. This could brighten teeth by several shades, as many as eight, in about one to two weeks.
