Traditional Versus Non-Prep Veneers

When you have multiple cosmetic issues with the appearance of your smile, then you may need one or more porcelain veneers. In addition to traditional restorations, we can offer a non-prep option that actually preserves more of your natural tooth structure. In today’s blog, your Katy, TX, dentist talks about our non-prep veneers.

Traditional Dental Veneers

For both options, we will attach a very thin shell of porcelain to the front of the teeth. The shell covers the front and sides of each tooth, and instantly changes the appearance of them. But for the traditional option, we have to remove a thin layer of outer enamel to make room for them. We do this in the first visit, and then gather detailed digital images to design and craft the final product. In a follow up visit, we will attach the finished veneers to the front of the teeth. However, with the non-prep option, we can offer a faster process that preserves tooth structure.

The Non-Prep Alternative

The non-prep veneers are also custom-made, but are even thinner so we can attach the finished restoration to your teeth without first removing any natural enamel. You don’t need anesthesia or multiple visits, as we simply attach a color matched and completed restoration to the teeth in one visit. These are durable and effective, and can last for many years, just like traditional cosmetic restorations do as well. Once in place, we can mask permanent teeth stains that could resist teeth whitening, lengthen worn down teeth, repair minor damage, and correct misshapen teeth too. We can close gaps between teeth and for some, even correct the appearance of minor misalignment without the need for braces or aligners.

Protecting Your New Restorations

To help them last for years to come and remain bright, you need to care for them daily as you do your natural teeth. Include them when you brush and floss, as this removes trapped food particles and controls plaque buildup, so your restorations stay bright and the teeth we’ve attached them to don’t develop decay, infection, or gum disease that could compromise them and cause tooth loss. This also helps your natural teeth remain stable, bright, and health too.
