Dental fillings don’t have to be made from metal. Our team can offer a metal-free and lifelike option that is safe for all ages. In today’s blog, your Katy, TX, dentist talks about when you may need a dental filling, and about the benefits of our lifelike composite resin dental fillings.
Tooth Decay and Dental Infection
Cavities are a very common threat to your smile, and one that can impact smiles of all ages, from babies and toddlers to teens and adults. Cavities form when the outer enamel of the teeth is compromised. This could be due to plaque buildup, brought on by poor oral hygiene, which weakens and erodes the enamel. Injury or teeth grinding could be responsible too. When this occurs, the inner layers are exposed to bacteria and cavities form, and unless treated, will grow and expand until the tooth is infected. Which is why a filling is so vital, you treat the decay and protect your teeth from infections and tooth loss.
Biocompatible Composite Resin
While metal is an effective material, it could be problematic for very young children, the elderly, pregnant women, or those with metal allergies. But we have an option that is safe for everyone and completely metal-free! Composite resin is a biocompatible material that combines quartz-like and acrylic-like particles. The material can also be shaded to blend with the rest of the tooth structure, offering a lifelike appearance. We also use the same material in our dental bonding procedures to address cosmetic issues, such as teeth stains, damaged or misshapen teeth, or smiles with gaps.
Placing Your Restoration
To place your filling only takes one appointment! We begin by taking digital x-rays to identify the position and severity of your cavity. We then numb the tooth with a local anesthetic and remove all decay from it. Once we do, we will clean the tooth and may gently etch portions of the outer structure. The composite resin is then prepared and applied in several layers. We sculpt and mold the tooth as the composite resin cures beneath a special light. We want to ensure a natural appearance and a properly balanced bite too. Finally, we polish the tooth for a brighter appearance and smoother surface. In one visit, we protect the health and beauty of your smile!
