Children and adults with special needs may have difficulty undergoing even routine dental care, which can impact their oral health and their overall health as well. But at Lathrop Dental Center, our team has experience in assisting families with members who have special needs. In today’s blog, your Katy, TX, dentist talks about providing optimal oral health for your family.
Working With Families
Our team has experience in working with children and adults alike who have special needs or are on the spectrum. We know that for families finding dental practices who can help the members of their family can be difficult, and we don’t want their unique needs to stand between them and the ability to enjoy a healthy and beautiful smile. We’re experienced in helping people and in fact, Dr. Lathrop’s oldest son is on the spectrum, so we’re uniquely qualified to address these challenges and help your family members enjoy optimal oral health.
Anesthesiologist Services
We know that to help patients with special needs receive necessary dental care, we may need to employ anesthesia. In addition to local anesthesia, we have trained and skilled anesthesiologists on our team who can offer dental sedation and monitor patients throughout the process. These options help kids and adults alike enter a state of calm and relaxation, often with little to no memory of the procedure. We have nitrous oxide for minor cases, which is administered through a mask of the nose and has effects that wear off once the procedure ends. For deeper states of calm, we have oral sedation administered through a pill or liquid, and IV that is provided intravenously. The option we recommend will depend on a number of factors, from age and weight to medical history and anxiety levels.
Caring for Smiles at Home
Our team will work with your family and create a treatment plan to address your family member’s unique needs. We can also discuss tips for improving oral hygiene at home, and discuss future visits to maintain optimal oral health for years to come. Along with dental sedation, we also have advanced technology to limit the time it takes to make a diagnosis, and to offer care with better precision and accuracy, while also limiting how much time is needed to be in the chair.
If you have any questions about how we help patients with special needs, then contact our team today. We look forward to hearing from you!
