Can’t Relax? Consider Nitrous Oxide.

There’s nothing unusual about feeling like you just can’t relax when you come in for dental care. Of course, we can easily promise you that there is absolutely nothing to feel anxious about. However, we do not discount the fact that dental anxiety is real and affects more patients than you might imagine. Regardless of the severity of your feelings, we offer nitrous oxide for a more pleasant experience. Have questions? We’d be more than happy to answer them (and would like to get you started with a quick introduction of Q’s and A’s).

Questions and Answers

Question: Is nitrous oxide the same thing as laughing gas? Is there a reason these two terms are both used?

Answer: These are most certainly the same thing. The reason for the terms is easy: The first is the clinical terminology. When we say “laughing gas,” it’s a more casual term to refer to the sensation it will likely cause as it relaxes you: You’ll feel much more at ease, lighthearted, and prone to laughter!

Question: Who makes a good candidate for this type of sedation? What if I’m not severely anxious but I definitely struggle with nerves before and during dental care?

Answer: Most patients, from children to all ages of adults. The thing that’s so wonderful about nitrous oxide is that it’s gentle yet very effective, so whether you have some mild nerves or feel quite anxious, it can help you.

Question: How does one receive nitrous oxide? Is it in pill form? Is it similar to IV sedation?

Answer: It’s not a pill or an IV. Instead, it’s a gas that you will breathe in. Don’t worry, it won’t feel strange or taste or smell bad. You’ll just breathe through a mask (it’s comfortable) and will experience the calming effects very quickly.
