What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet rich plasma treatment, often referred to as PRP, is a way to improve your ability to heal after having oral surgery. Treatment involves taking a small vial of your own blood and separating its content. The plasma is then extracted from the sample and placed over surgical sites to help in the healing process. Not only does PRP treatment help your body to heal naturally, but it can be helpful in preventing infections.

Why is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) needed?

PRP treatment is ideal for patients who are undergoing surgical procedures. It is a great way to improve your body's ability to heal after an invasive procedure has been done. Likewise, PRP can help to prevent infections in and around the surgical site, which can eliminate the issues involved with post-surgical complications. Treatment uses your own blood plasma, which is safe and sterile.

Who is a candidate for Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Most patients are good candidates for PRP treatment. We will go over all health and medical history prior to recommending this treatment option. We often recommend PRP treatment to patients who are undergoing surgeries and any procedure where your body needs assistance in healing. The procedure involves taking a sample of blood using venipuncture methods, so this should be expected at the time of your appointment.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) TREATMENT?

The first step is to take a small sample of blood from your arm using venipuncture procedures. We then place the vial of blood into a high-speed centrifuge and spin it to separate the different elements inside. We then extract the plasma from the vial and put this aside for later use. We use the plasma over the surgical site so that it can benefit the healing and recovery process. We can utilize PRP treatment for any and all surgical procedures that you will undergo in our office.
