Appliances to Help Relieve Snoring and Treat Sleep Apnea
Is your loved one constantly telling you that you snore throughout the night? Do you wake up feeling more tired than when you went to sleep? If so, you may be experiencing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a common sleep disorder. Most people who experience OSA don’t know they have it, as it usually doesn’t fully wake one up from sleeping. One distinctive sign of OSA is chronic snoring punctuated by silent moments. (That’s when you’re not breathing!) If OSA is left untreated, you may experience other health issues, such as increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, and memory issues. We can help, though, with a snoring appliance. Be sure to let us know about any snoring issues you have when you come in for an exam and cleaning.
What is a Snoring Appliance?
Snoring and sleep apnea are the results of oral tissues partially blocking one’s airway while sleeping. With OSA, the blockage completely fills the airway, stopping someone from breathing for several moments until the body is forced to move towards wakefulness, to clear the airway. These constant disruptions interrupt the sleep cycle, making it a challenge to experience the deep sleep that your body and brain needs to function effectively. To treat this, we can fit you with a custom-designed oral appliance that is designed to hold your jaw forward to help prevent tissues from blocking the airway. The oral appliance is more comfortable than a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine, and it does not make any noise.
